Fractalight

This project started as an exploration of a hobby of mine – making giant bubbles.  Everyone loves looking at bubbles – they border on the surreal and enter the sublime with the beauty they create. They are a silent peaceful magic that makes everyone’s day better, especially the kids. They are the purest forms of joy. At once mesmerising and exotic.

I always had it in mind to photograph them but I mostly just observed their reactions in different light conditions, storing this information for future use.

I have learned a lot about making bubbles over the past ten years; colour is determined by thickness, the thinner the membrane the more colour, the membrane is a few microns thick(crazy), humidity is a friend , and evaporation, dust, strong wind makes them pop, etc, etc.

My photographic exploration with bubble membranes began simply – making images of bubbles. After a while it became less and less about shape and more about the dancing wave the membrane performs.  It is very fast, but you can see highlights racing through seas of deep colour: the surface and wide swathes of colour wrapping around and collapsing at the same time, the specular light racing along a micron thin wave.

The only influence I have on the song is tempo.

[As time passed I became less interested in the shape of the bubble and more interested in the dynamics of the wave forms. I could see the play of light in real-time. I started to see the music of secret light revealed. The chaotic patterns and the colours of infinity.

I saw the possibilities of abstraction in the membrane’s dance, using time and space as the stage for the performance, for the dance of the membrane and the dancing light.

The song of light took me into a realm of abstract chaos or at least it seems to be chaos because it is beyond my comprehension to see pattern and intent.

The white light revealed itself to me over time and space. it sang to me in frequencies of colour as it danced on an ethereal surface a micron thick;  light split into rainbow waves, creating fractaled realities – danced for the short time I was allowed to witness.

Each image is a song and you are seeing the symphony of light and hearing the fractal instruments in a concert hall of time and space.

But it is chaos. On each viewing you are invited into a new symphony; the dashed notes and stops on a musical staff of boundless colour, the blue Winds and the copper Brass, the verdant magentas of Strings.

They join together and create concurrently as if the frequency belongs to its own genre of music.

  What song do you hear?

Light and sound in their purest forms are waves

They are the most important waves in our reality. Without them there is very little to life.

It looks as if the colours are playing music to try to convey a message that we are too limited to grasp or understand.
